EL CAJON, Calif. – Police are investigating a claim that an Uber driver sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman in February, authorities announced Wednesday.
In late February, El Cajon police received a report of a woman alleging she was sexually assaulted by an Uber driver while she was a passenger in his car, Lt. Rob Ransweiler said. John Sanchez, 52, was later identified as the suspect.
ECPD served search warrants on the suspect’s residence, as well as his silver 2012 Scion XB, as part of this investigation. Sanchez was arrested on Tuesday, Ransweiler said.
El Cajon detectives are trying to determine if the alleged assault was an isolated incident or if there are other victims.
Sanchez is described as a Hispanic man, 5-feet, 7-inches tall with wavy brown hair.
Sanchez was charged with rape of an intoxicated person and faces 8 years in prison. His bail was set at $100,000.
Uber is cooperating with the investigation and suspended Sanchez. The company released a statement Wednesday:
"Uber takes safety incidents like this very seriously, and our thoughts are with the victim and her family. Uber immediately removed this driver-partner from the platform following our initial contact with the El Cajon Police Department. We have been working closely with law enforcement to assist their investigation."
