A 30-year-old Uber driver has been charged after a woman claimed she was sexually assaulted while using the ride-share service.
York regional police said a 34-year-old woman arranged for an Uber to pick her up in the Yonge Street and Major Mackenzie Drive are of Richmond Hill.
The driver drove the victim to a parking lot in the area of 16th Avenue and Woodbine Avenue in Markham where she was allegedly sexually assaulted.
Ahmadfayim Bayat, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with sexual assault.
In a statement, Uber said they were cooperating with police.
“We take every safety incident very seriously and are committed to the safety of everyone who uses Uber,” spokesperson Susie Heath said.
“As soon as we became aware of the investigation, we reached out to York Regional Police to offer our assistance. Our safety response team is working quickly to gather information”
